SHADOWS OVER THE CONTINENT
SYNOPSIS
In 2012, the President of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo, was swiftly impeached in just three days. In 2016, the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, was removed from the highest executive office in the country through a complex and controversial parliamentary and legal process. Between 2007 and 2015, Argentina's President Cristina Kirchner was constantly targeted by the media and legal system, under threat from her political opponents, turning Argentina into a hotspot of intense social conflict.
What are the possible connections between these events?
"Shadows Over the Continent" tells the recent history of these three South American countries and reflects on new forms of authoritarianism in 21st-century Latin America, in the context of democratic debate and lawfare.
The project features exclusive interviews with key figures in these stories, such as Dilma Rousseff, Fernando Lugo, former Colombian President Ernesto Samper, former Bolivian President Evo Morales, among other lawmakers and legal experts from Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.
The series is hosted by Pedro Serrano, a renowned Brazilian lawyer, who introduces us to the concept of authoritarianism from a global and contextual perspective.
